Chemical resistance

Chemical resistance

The chemical resistance of plastics is a huge and complex topic. Generally the first consideration to make is whether the plastic is amorphous or crystalline. Amorphous plastics such as polycarbonate are sensitive to environmental stress-cracking. Crystalline materials generally have better resistance. Further, mechanical stress can accentuate this problem, with parts being subjected to mechanical load, or having internal stresses (quality issue: material being insufficiently tempered, or processed outside optimal conditions). Increased temperature will also add effect to the chemical attack.
